Review: Stronger by Jeff Bauman

Hello everyone! I’m so honored that the fabulous Ms. Kirkpatrick asked me to be a part of this website. I’ve never reviewed anything before, so here goes nothin. Don’t be too hard on me…

Stronger is the autobiography of Jeff Bauman – a name you likely don’t recognize. Jeff isn’t a member of a rock band. He didn’t become a dot com millionaire. He didn’t invent a new diet fad. Jeff happened to be cheering for his girlfriend on the sidelines of the 2013 Boston Marathon, and lost both his legs when the bombing occurred. Stronger is the story of what happened to Jeff that day, and follows his journey through the toughest year of his life.

I’m not quite sure what made me reach for this book – I’ve never read anything from this genre before – but I’m glad I did. Jeff’s story made me laugh and cry, as expected, but it also uplifted me at the same time. It’s a tragic story, but also an amazing one that not only reminds us how strong the human spirit is, but also how amazing strangers can be in times of crisis.

If you forced me to pick apart Stronger I could say that at times you can tell Jeff is an amateur author. I could say that it ended a little too abruptly for my liking. But overall this was an amazing read regardless of the genres you normally enjoy. Do yourself a favor and add it to your reading list. It’s a quick read, a great story, and you’ll be thinking about it and Jeff long after you put it down.
