Review: Must Love Otters by Eliza Gordon

When it comes to books, I bounce around between quite a few genres, whether it’s paranormal YA, mysteries from Miss Christie, horror and thrillers, sci-fi, and…rom coms. I don’t know what it is about this genre, but I can never quite go long without reading one. I have my favorites, but I seem to always be finding new ones. Eliza Gordon is now on my list of favorites, after I had the opportunity to indulge in her first book, Must Love Otters. It’s a peculiar title perhaps, but has such a fantastic cover. That drew me in straight away.

Hollie Porter is a girl in crisis. At twenty-five, she’s a mess. She works a job she hates, lives with a boyfriend that she dislikes, along with his annoying dogs, and can’t seem to find any direction to her life. She’s a lost soul, floating on the open ocean, waiting for land. Funny enough, that scenario comes up later in the book but it’s a stark point made by this delightful rom-com. Sometimes you need a bit of chaos, and then some quiet, to figure out what you’re really after in life. Hollie finds herself (quite literally) at a luxury resort on an island off the west coast of Canada, where she also happens to meet some handsome fellows. Hollie is an awkward girl at times, so there are plenty of laughs as she attempts to start over on her life.

This book was refreshing and hilarious, and heart-warming all at the same time! I look forward to reading Eliza’s latest, Neurotica, as well. She’s got a gift and I would say it’s not one you want to miss out on! A definite must-read!

Karly Kirkpatrick would stay home and read all day if it were possible. When she’s not reading, she’s teaching stuff, writing, at the movies, or traveling. You can find out more about Karly at, or look her up on Facebook or Twitter (@karlkirkpatrick).
